Funding: Preparation of a doctoral dissertation project

The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne, the interdisciplinary graduate school of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne, offers 8 “Predoc” scholarships for the preparation of a doctoral dissertation project, each of EUR 950 monthly and for a time period of six months starting October 1st, 2017
The purpose of the Predoc scholarships is to enable candidates to begin working towards a doctorate at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne immediately after obtaining their qualifying degree. The scholarship holders are supported for one semester during which they are able to develop a doctoral project with a specific focus on interdisciplinary aspects.

The ICSOR Grant Program provides residence in Rome for researchers intending to carry out projects regarding the sociology of religion. The grants provided will fund initial research into hypotheses that have not been fully explored as yet. Research applications will be judged principally on the basis of the novelty the hypotheses and the innovative approaches proposed, their direct relevance and applicability to the sociology of religion, their scientific quality and methodological strengths. ICSOR Grant Awardees will be required to provide progress reports concerning their work during the entire duration of their residency and present their findings at the end of their stay in Rome and/or through a report/article published no later than one year after the end of the grant.

Åbo Akademi Doctoral Training Network for Minority Research (MinRes) VERY SHORT NOTICE!

The Åbo Akademi Doctoral Training Network for Minority Research (MinRes) is a new network in in the Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology. It is based on cooperation between the disciplines psychology, theology (systematic theology and ethics), and religious studies at Åbo Akademi University.

The ambition of the doctoral network is to create a much needed cross-disciplinary network for PhD students to conduct research related specifically to understanding the current nature, conditions, and effects of devaluating attitudes and relations towards minorities. This can include themes such as the current polarization of values and populist anti-minority speech; institutional, cultural and public models of accepted identities and logics of surveillance; religious and/or ideological frameworks as motivational structures in relating to and understanding minorities; verbal or physical violence against minorities; effects of negative attitudes and violence on e.g. subjective well-being; means to prevent radicalization and decrease associated violence; and novel alternative public strategies that better foster and guarantee the protection of minorities. These themes are, however, preliminary and will be defined definitively in the initiations process of the network and through recruitment of doctoral students in order to establish a coherent and dynamic doctoral network.

In this network doctoral students will pursue their projects as a team and under the supervision of Prof. Peter Nynäs (religious studies), Prof. Mikael Lindfelt (theology) and Prof. Pekka Santtila (psychology.). The Åbo Akademi University Minority Research profile that is currently developed will provide an additional important resource for the network.

Fast Track doctoral scholarships

Starting October 1st, 2016 the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne offers Fast Track doctoral scholarships over a period of three years.
The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School serves the entire Faculty of Arts and Humanities and covers all qualification levels of academic training in the arts and humanities – from Master to postdoc. The Fast Track model allows students in their last semester of Master’s studies to immediately be accepted as doctoral students in the structured programme of the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School. Candidates admitted to the structured doctoral programme are supervised by a team of three researchers and study a curriculum that involves, among other things, participation in regular meetings of one of the six interdisciplinary graduate classes.
The Fast Track model addresses excellent graduates who are already able to present a viable proposal for a doctoral dissertation project directly after the completion of their degree and who are therefore able to be immediately accepted into the structured doctoral programme of the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School. The doctoral projects of the scholarship holders will be supervised by full professors at the University of Cologne. Applicants may contact potential supervisors in the course of application.
The Fast Track doctoral scholarship is a full scholarship at EUR 1.250 per month and is awarded for three years, starting October 1st, 2016. Please send your complete application documents by May 20, 2016 (application receipt).

Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne is offering 8 scholarships to help candidates prepare themselves for their doctoral studies.
The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School serves the entire Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne and covers all qualification levels of academic training in the arts and humanities – from Master to postdoc. The purpose of the scholarships for the preparation of a doctoral dissertation project is to enable candidates to begin working towards a doctorate at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne as soon as possible after obtaining their Master’s degrees.

The a.r.t.e.s. scholarships for the preparation of a doctoral dissertation project will consist of a monthly payment of EUR 950, limited to six months, starting October 01, 2016.

Conference: Religious Pluralisation – A Challenge for Modern Societies

Travel Grants available! The challenges of religious pluralization and the contribution to be made by interreligious dialogue in the areas of societal and scientific discourse will be discussed at the Herrenhausen Conference on October 4-6, 2016, in Hanover.

The long-held belief in the secularization thesis and the subsequent expectation that religion would gradually lose its societal relevance in public and scientific discourse led to religion being treated rather as a side issue. This has changed fundamentally in the wake of growing religious pluralization. In this respect, both the destructive potential of religion as well as initiatives designed to promote understanding between people of different religions and worldviews play a significant role. In view of these ambivalences, a need has arisen for clarification in the area of societal as well as scientific discourse. The planned conference will debate the challenges of religious pluralization and the contribution to be made by interreligious dialogue in five thematic areas – theology, politics/civil society, education, Communication/media and contexts. The aim of the conference is to describe innovative scientific approaches and broad political and social scopes of action for addressing religious plurality.

Travel Grants

The Volkswagen Foundation offers up to 30 Travel Grants for young researchers who wish to attend the conference. We are inviting Ph.D. students or early Postdocs (max. 5 years since Ph.D.) working on independent and challenging projects in the field of religious pluralization or in a field for which religious pluralisation is crucial to apply for a travel grant. Applicants are required to apply until March 30, 2016 by using the application form. The travel grant covers attendance, accommodation and travel expenses (excl. cab fares, parking, food and beverages while travelling as well as poster printing costs).

The conference is held at Herrenhausen Palace, a new conference center in Hanover, Germany. You can reach the venue by tram: Take line 4 or 5 and get off at “Herrenhäuser Gärten”.
