We are once again collaborating with the Islamic Manuscript Association’s Introduction to Islamic Codicology course on 23–27 September 2019 at Cambridge University Library, Cambridge.
This intensive five-day course will introduce the study of Islamic manuscript codices as physical objects, or the archaeology of the Islamic book. The lectures will provide an overview of writing supports, the structure of quires, ruling and page layout, bookbinding, ornamentation, tools and materials used in book making, the palaeography of book hands, and writing Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) manuscript descriptions. During hands-on sessions, participants will examine Islamic manuscripts from Cambridge University Library’s collections and complete a series of practical exercises on codicological description.

We are offering 2 PhD scholarships (1 based in Sydney and 1 in Perth) as part of the Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project: “The African Diaspora and Pentecostalism in Australia: New Perspectives on Materiality, Media and Religion.”
This project investigates the new African Diaspora in Australia and its embrace of Pentecostalism, particularly after arrival. The African community in Australia has often been associated with poor settlement outcomes, and has also been on the receiving end of a racialised moral panic. The project aims: to understand the range of challenges African-Australian communities faces; to determine why so many of their members join Pentecostal churches; to investigate how Pentecostal churches support these communities’ translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging, and; to contribute to policy efforts to improve outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia.
Within this larger project, the PhD candidates will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia, and with African Diasporas in the country. Both projects will investigate questions such as: how do Pentecostal churches support/hinder processes of settlement and ‘integration’? How do some Pentecostal megachurches generate transnational religious fields – ones which may harness resources from branches elsewhere in the world? And what impact does all of this have on Australian cities’ post-secular social landscapes?
We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds: anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, Migration studies or a related field. In particular, the project is suitable for candidates with strong interests in the intersections of migration and religion. Applications from students of African heritage are especially welcomed.

The Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California (USC) is seeking applications for its Generations in Dialogue (GID) program about the Sociology of Religion.
The GID program involves a widely-recognized senior Catholic scholar sharing his or her time, expertise, and wisdom with several junior scholars in the same or related disciplines. Over a two-year period these scholars convene for four weekend dialogues that include discipline-specific discussions, personal reflection, shared prayer, and presentations from distinguished scholars and public intellectuals. Besides benefitting from two years of mentorship, junior scholars will establish relationships with other dedicated scholars in their field.
A generous stipend is included. Early-career (pre-tenure and dissertation stage) social scientists are eligible. Applications are welcome from anyone interested in a substantive and critical engagement with Catholicism’s multiple intellectual traditions

We invite applications from qualified and highly motivated students to work in the area of religion, diversity, and work and employment. This research project investigates how workers negotiate faith/religious values in a multi-cultural/multi-faith workplace and how they comply/contest practices in the world of work guided by faith-related values and the use of religious artefacts and ceremonies. This interdisciplinary research will pay particular attention to the production of religious artefacts (shrines, effigies, scapulars, prayer cards, saint cards, etc.), and practices of faith at the work place (dress code, special time off, religious jewellery, dietary requirements, prayer, meditation).

A doctoral research fellowship (PhD) in religious studies is available at the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway.
Topic: Indigenous religion(s) in the media. Applicants should propose a case study of how indigenous practices from one particular indigenous community are articulated or represented as religious and/or spiritual in one or more media and broadcasted locally, nationally, regionally, and/or globally. Which translations do the practices then undergo? Who controls these translations? What do they generate? The research project should also shed light on the broader political and social situation of the indigenous community and ask how such articulations or representations in different media have both political and religious significance.
The PhD project will be part of the research group “Indigenous Religion(s): Local Grounds, Global Networks” (INREL) that studies articulations of indigenous religion(s) in different contexts around the world and explores the relations between local and globalizing discourses of indigeneity and religion.
The appointment is a fixed term position for a period of four years, includes teaching and administration duties, and comes with a salary.

The Social Studies Department, Institute of Basic Education of the Satbayev University is hosting an International Summer School on the Sacred Places of Almaty and area from 1-8th August 2018. The Summer school aims to contribute to the process of dealing with the past of our city and Region in the frame of the State Program “Rukhani Zhangyru”.
Description.
The Summer School will be held in English language, thus a proficient knowledge of English is required. We highly encourage overseas colleagues to join us and present their research and ideas in front of a very friendly, enthusiastic and open-minded international audience. The most successful Summer school students will have the possibility to publish their research paper in the summer school reader after the end of the summer school. Participants who will successfully complete the program will be awarded with the Summer School Certificate.
We plan to invite 20-30 participants to the International Summer School on the Sacred Places of Almaty and area, including scholars, lecturers, BA, MA and PhD students, who are interested in history and religion, as well current situation in Kazakhstan.
We would like to invite for participation outstanding people from Kazakhstan and other countries. The project will benefit 20-30 professionals with different backgrounds. It will be a gender and age balanced group. The Summer school will consist of 8 days of lectures, workshops and discussions with academic professors and experts, as well as field trips and participation in cultural activities and events. It will be unique opportunity to get deep knowledge about history and timely questions of the Sacred places of Almaty city and area.

Цель мероприятия – формирование исследовательских навыков у молодых
ученых, изучающих исламскую культуру в России и в ближнем зарубежье.
Наша исследовательская лаборатория ориентирована на начинающих
исследователей, делающих первые шаги в науке. Мы поможем с написанием
научных текстов, обсудим тонкости работы в «поле», будь то городская
среда или сельская местность. Все занятия в лаборатории интерактивны.
Каждый участник будет иметь возможность обсудить свой текст,
исследовательские планы, протестировать гипотезы и поработать с
коллегами над общим проектом. В рамках мероприятия запланированы квесты,
экскурсии, открытые лекции и мастер-классы в татарской слободе г. Пензы,
на городище Наровчат, а также в с. Средняя Елюзань.
Участниками школы могут стать:
студенты всех курсов гуманитарных направлений (бакалавры и магистры,
аспиранты первых курсов);
приветствуется знание английского и/или одного восточного языка.
За несколько недель до мероприятия участникам будут разосланы учебные
материалы.
Заявка на участие должна включать: CV, мотивационное письмо и письменную
работу (статья, эссе, дипломная работа и т.п.).
