Call for Proposals for New Editor(s)

The Religion and Politics section of the American Political Science Association invites applications from individuals, pairs, or teams for the editorship of Politics and Religion (P&R) from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2021. Nominations and self-nominations are encouraged. The section particularly encourages nomination of pairs or teams of editors where each editor represents a different country and a variety of substantive expertise.
Interested applicants for editor should be senior scholars and members in good standing of the Religion and Politics section. Applicants are expected to have records of significant research accomplishment in the subfield of Religion and Politics, intellectual breadth and depth, an entrepreneurial approach to attracting and soliciting quality manuscripts, authors, and reviewers, and excellent administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Politics and Religion is the flagship journal for the subfield of Religion and Politics, published by Cambridge University Press. P&R receives close to 100 submissions per year and continues to grow. As a result, serving as editor requires substantial commitments of time, intellectual effort, and management skill. It also offers an opportunity to shape the intellectual direction of the journal and the field.
The P&R editor reports to the Executive Committee of the Religion and Politics Section of APSA and to the Publishing Editor at Cambridge University Press. The editor will appoint book review editors and journal editorial board members in consultation with the section’s executive committee. The editor is required to provide at least one written report per year on the state of the journal, in addition to frequent informal consultation with the section and CUP. Cambridge University Press provides a stipend to the editor each year to defray some of the administration costs of the journal.

Successful candidates will conduct qualitative sociological research in the context of an interdisciplinary research project and will write their dissertations in sociology.

Description

Controversies over questions such as gender equality, bioethics, and the role of religion in society have shown a disruptive potential across many societies. They have also become the subject of transnational political contestation. The “Postsecular Conflicts” project will study such debates between liberal and conservative political and religious actors over moral and religious issues in international institutions such as the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, and forums of inter-religious dialogue.
The doctoral students in this project will do qualitative sociological research in the field under the supervision of the principal investigator and will write a dissertation congruent with the project’s aims.

Professorship ‘Religion and Society’ (W3/W2) / Professur ‘Religion und Gesellschaft‘ (W3/W2)

The Forum International Science (FIW), University of Bonn, invites applications for a professorship (W3/W2) in ‘Religion and Society’ (professorship starting at the earliest possible date in 2016). The FIW which already has departments in science studies and the comparative study of political regimes will add a third department for the comparative study of religions.

Applicants for the professorship are expected to have competences (documented in teaching, research and publications) in the following fields: comparative study of religions in modern society; research on globalization and world society; comparison of religion with other function systems in society. The professorship will build up the department for comparative religion in close cooperation with the two other departments.

Cooperation will especially focus on proposals for third-party funding. We prepare a cooperative research project on “System/environment relations of the modern system of science, 1750 – 2015”. Therefore, applicants should be interested in interrelations of religion and science and should propose a project in this field. The other focus of cooperation will be a common master curriculum of the three departments to be designed in the next two years.

Precondition for an appointment is a habilitation thesis or similar qualifications. Formal requirements are regulated by § 36 Hochschulgesetz (HG NRW).

Das ‚Forum Internationale Wissenschaft‘ lädt zu Bewerbungen für eine Professur ‚Religion und Gesellschaft‘ (W3/W2) ein. Das FIW wird den beiden vorhandenen Abteilungen für Wissenschaftsforschung und für das vergleichende Studium politischer Regimes in der ersten Hälfte 2016 eine weitere Abteilung für vergleichende Religionsforschung hinzufügen.

Von den Bewerberinnen und Bewerbern wird erwartet, dass sie in Lehre, Forschung und Publikation dokumentierte Kompetenzen auf folgenden Gebieten besitzen: Vergleichende Erforschung der Religionen der Moderne; Forschung über Globalisierung und Weltgesellschaft; Vergleich der Religion mit anderen Funktionssystemen der Gesellschaft. Die hauptsächliche Aufgabe der Professur ist der Aufbau der Abteilung für vergleichende Religionsforschung in möglichst enger Kooperation mit den beiden anderen Abteilungen.

Kooperation schließt insbesondere die für das FIW zunehmend wichtige Drittmitteleinwerbung ein. Zur Zeit bereitet das FIW ein größeres Drittmittelprojekt zu den ‚System/Umwelt-Beziehungen des Wissenschaftssystems der Moderne, 1750-2015‘ vor. Deshalb ist es wichtig, dass Bewerberinnen und Bewerber sich für die Interaktion von Wissenschaft und Religion interessieren und ein Projekt in diesem Bereich skizzieren. Job Opening: Luce Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations – Hartford Seminary

Hartford Seminary is seeking a scholar who is a recognized expert in the study of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations and will provide a Christian perspective to the newly established Ph.D. program in Islamic Studies & Christian-Muslim relations.  The appointment begins in fall 2016.

As a scholar, the candidate should demonstrate experience and expertise in Christian-Muslim relations and may be grounded in one of a number of disciplines. The successful candidate must be able to teach both introductory and advanced levels and have the intellectual depth required to direct Ph.D. students.
The appointment is to the core faculty of the Seminary. It carries the full time teaching load of four courses per year, student advising load expected of all faculty, and regular faculty committee and administrative responsibilities to be determined in relation to the candidate’s gifts and the seminary’s needs. Scholarly research and productivity are priorities in light of the school’s history as a place of advanced learning and publication.

Rank is at the Associate level or above; Ph.D. or Th.D. is required. We especially encourage applications from women and historically underrepresented ethnic groups.

The Department of History, in conjunction with the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMSC) at Simon Fraser University, seeks to make an appointment at the rank of associate professor (with tenure for qualifying candidates) in the field of comparative Muslim societies and cultures. Exceptional candidates at the rank of assistant professor (without tenure) may also be considered.  The recommended candidate will serve as director of the CCSMSC for a 5-year term.  The teaching load for the Director will be 3 courses per year over 2 teaching semesters. The director of the CCSMSC will have access to research funding from the Centre.

Strong candidates in all disciplinary fields will be given serious consideration. The geographic area of specialization is open. Knowledge of Arabic and/or Persian or other regional research language(s) is preferred. The successful candidate will have an international reputation with a strong publication record and extensive teaching experience, preferably at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In this role you will contribute to extending the research profile of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies in the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at Exeter, particularly in areas related or complementary to the study of Gender with reference to the modern Middle East and/or Islam.

You will hold a PhD or equivalent in Middle East Studies, Politics, Sociology, Anthropology, Gender Studies or related fields, and have an independent, internationally-recognised research programme in an active field of Social Science and Gender Studies research related or complementary to existing Exeter strengths.
