Religious Actors and Organisations as Providers of Social Welfare

In Germany as well as in many other countries, religious organisations play an important role in the provision of social services. Nevertheless, in the last years the field is confronted with new problems and challenges. The Special Issue of the Zeitschrift für Religion, Gesellschaft und Politik (ZRGP)/ Journal for Religion, Society and Politics aims to collect papers on social services provided by religious organisations. The contributions may deal with transformations of established institutions, with the appearance of new actors or the disappearance of former ones as well as with the relations between religious and secular actors. We also look for papers on the relevance of religious beliefs and belongings for the provision of social services. Especially the following topics are of special interest:
1.                 We invite papers analysing the role of churches, denominations and religious organi-sations as providers of social services. The special issue aims to deliver a critical review of the situation in different countries and to explore the transformations of the field in the last decades. Additionally, papers may examine the hybrid nature of these organisations because of their simultaneous inclusion in the field of welfare provision as well as in religious contexts. They are confronted with various challenges as results of processes of secularisation and of religious diversification. Contributions to the special issue may examine how religious providers of social services deal with these challenges.
2.                 Many social services are provided by voluntary action within religious communities or milieus. This applies especially to ethnic churches and congregations, e.g. mosques or Pentecostal communities. Their activities complement, or sometimes even substitute, social services provided by state institutions. In some cases, the transformation of vol-untary action into professional services can be observed. We invite papers analysing social services of religious volunteers and their relation to professional work.
3.                 The role of religious actors in the provision of social services differs depending on the religious traditions and the welfare regimes within nation states. Regarding the respec-tive state-church-relationship and welfare tradition, countries offer various contexts and diverse conditions for religious actors in welfare provision. Case studies on differ-ent countries can show the various political, economic and judicial backgrounds for re-ligious actors in welfare provision. They can elaborate their implications and effects on the religious organisations themselves, the clients and users of social services as well as for the welfare state as such.

Journal for Religion, Society and Politics
The aim of the Zeitschrift für Religion, Gesellschaft und Politik (ZRGP) is the analysis of religion and religiosity and their intertwinement with political issues, conflicts and constella-tions; given the extensive processes of religious pluralisation, new and alternative modes of presentation, interpretation and clarification are warranted in order to better understand the relationship of religion and politics as well as their embeddedness in changing societies and religious conflicts, discourses and debates. The ZRGP is a medium of academic communica-tion, publishing discipline-specific as well as interdisciplinary contributions and discussions. Our aim is to provide an interdisciplinary perspective on the relationship of religion(s), society, and politics. We welcome theoretical and empirical (both quantitative and qualitative) articles with a social science perspective. The journal explicitly responds to a current academic, social and political interest in religion, its contexts, consequences and scientific and quotidian interpretations.

ANNUAL REVIEW OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION

Volume 11 (forthcoming 2020)

CHINESE RELIGIONS GOING GLOBAL

Edited by:
Nanlai Cao (Renmin University of China), Giuseppe Giordan (University
of Padova, Italy) and Fenggang Yang (Purdue University, USA)

Four decades of economic reform and opening up in China has brought
about dramatic social and cultural changes associated with
globalization. As China is being increasingly integrated into global
economy, more and more Chinese live transnational lives and practice
religion globally. So far the scholarship of the interrelationship
between religion and globalization in the Chinese religious field has
primarily been set in the historical context of the encounter between
Western Christian missionaries and local Chinese agents.
By now the relationship has become substantially diversified, with an
increasing number of Chinese people going abroad for various religious
as well as non-religious reasons, including planting new temples and
churches to reach local people as well as serving the Chinese
diaspora. At the present stage of China’s globalization, there is an
intellectual urgency of going beyond the China/West dichotomy in the
common narrative of globalization that assumes western concepts and
forces transform the lives of local Chinese people.
This volume seeks to challenge the dichotomous ordering of the western
global and the Chinese local, and add a new perspective for
understanding religious modernity globally. To explore these issues we
propose to include articles on the following themes, covering a range
of different religions and geographic areas:

1.      Changing state-religion dynamics and the globalization of Chinese religions
2.      The rise of new diasporic religious communities, networks and movements
3.      Interreligious dialogue and politics in the context of China’s
globalization
4.      Chinese religions in the transnational context of secularism,
cultural pluralism, and multifaith societies
5.      Transnational Chinese religions and emerging information technologies
6.      Religion among the second generation Chinese immigrant youth
7.      Transnational Chinese religiosities and gender relations

New book on Islam in Tajikistan/Central Asia – Transforming Tajikistan: State-Building and Islam in Post-Soviet Central Asia

Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the publication of a new book on religious revival in Central Asia.

Transforming Tajikistan: State-Building and Islam in Post-Soviet Central Asia
by Helene Thibault
This book demonstrates how Soviet structures in Tajikistan have been transformed into state structures, and how national identities are formed. Helene Thibault focuses on the differences between secular nationhood in Tajikistan, and an increasingly popular and influential `born-again’ Muslim identity. Featuring extensive and original primary-source material, including 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork, Thibault demonstrates the profound and lasting influence of Soviet power structures and attitudes, and how secular and religious identities clash when building a new state in the region.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Religion and Poverty

Thematic Collection in Palgrave Communications

Editors: Dr Gottfried Schweiger and Dr Helmut P Gaisbauer (University of Salzburg); Prof Clemens Sedmak (University of Notre Dame).

Website: https://www.nature.com/palcomms/for-authors/call-for-papers#religion-poverty

Submissions welcome on a rolling basis throughout 2018!

Poverty and religion are interrelated in different ways. On the one hand, for various religious traditions poverty is both an aspect of a particular faithful life (e.g. monastic communities) and giving to the poor is seen as a religious duty. Such traditions have evolved over time and expanded the role of faith-based organisations nowadays play in welfare provision and international development. Faith-based organizations play an important role in poverty alleviation both in rich and poor countries. These actions and practices, as well as their religious and theological underpinnings, deserve scrutiny. On the other hand, religion plays an important role in the life of people living in poverty: how they experience and shape their living, and how they find their place in society and the communities in which they. The role of religion in justifying certain inequalities and processes of exclusion (e.g. in India) and thus contributing to the sustainability of poverty is another important theme worth reflection.

We invite papers, from a range of disciplinary perspectives, that consider the following overarching question: how can religion be used as a vehicle to overcome structures of poverty, and how does it sometimes hinder such processes?

Contributions from sociology, development studies, religious studies, economics, theology, and other social sciences and humanities are welcomed; as are insights from different geographical settings, forms of poverty, and religious traditions.

This is a rolling article collection and as such submissions/proposals will be welcome throughout 2018.

This special issue is run in collaboration with the 2017 Salzburg Conference on Interdisciplinary Poverty Research, organised by the Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research of the University of Salzburg: www.poverty-conference.org

The 24th Nordic Conference in the Sociology of Religion (NCSR 2018)

August 1-3, 2018 in Oslo, Norway.

Growing religious diversity characterizes most countries across the world, often linked to the globalization of migration, politics, economies, and the media. The diversity offers new challenges of managing religion in countries that previously were more religiously homogenous.

The 24th Nordic Conference for Sociology of Religion seeks a more thorough understanding, theoretically as well as empirically, of religion, politics, and boundaries. While sociologists often have attempted to understand these developments in terms of single dimension theories, we would like to find out how this complexity is part of processes of change and continuity in contemporary society.
We invite papers that focus on these and other topics in the sociology of religion.
