Senior scholar position at Notre Dame in the study of global religion. Application deadline: August 25

The Keough School of Global Affairs invites applications for a senior faculty position in the study of global religion, with a focus on how the world’s religions contribute to integral human development, broadly understood to encompass peacebuilding, human rights, health care, education and other social goods. The successful candidate will also serve as the inaugural director of the Rafat and Zoreen Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion.

The mission of the Ansari Institute is to engage the world’s religions in collaborative efforts to reduce poverty, mediate conflict, build peace, promote human rights and in other ways advance integral human development. Reflecting the values of Notre Dame as a leading faith-based university, the Ansari Institute is dedicated to research and scholarship that will inform public education about religions’ roles in human development and shape critical, constructive engagement with religious actors.

Assistant Professor of Religion and Society, Boston University

BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in Fall 2018. The candidate should be a scholar working at the intersections of religion, theology, and the social sciences, with methodological competencies in areas such as qualitative methods, ethnography, and lived religion. A PhD or ThD in an appropriate discipline is required, and the candidate must have potential for a strong record of publications in their chosen field. An additional seminary degree (e.g., MDiv, MTS, MAR) is highly desirable. Areas of expertise are open, but candidates who address congregational or community studies, human diversity in local and global contexts, sexuality, ecology, social transformation, and/or political and ethical engagement are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates must be competent to teach master’s level theology students. They must be able to teach social science research methods and guide students through research protocols. Responsibilities include teaching and advising doctoral students in areas such as practical theology, congregational studies, ethics, religious leadership, and church and society. The School has committed to the formation of intercultural competence and social justice in all aspects of our learning community, and we seek candidates who are eager and skilled in providing leadership to realize these goals.

Job Opening: Anthropology of Islam

The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Groningen, seeks to appoint an an anthropologist or a scholar from a closely related discipline with expertise in the field of Contemporary Islam (0.8 fte) for a period of 5 years.

The candidate should have a competence in the fields of Islam in relation to migration and identity also with regard to the MENA region in order to be able to teach courses on these themes. Language of instruction is English.

Beside these teaching related competences the faculty is looking for a scholar whose research lies preferably in the field of contemporary Islam in Asia so as to contribute to the Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture in Asia (see www.rug.nl/research/centre-religion-culture-asia) of the faculty.

Two PhD scholarships for dissertation projects related to Buddhism.

The Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany offers two PhD scholarships for dissertation projects related to Buddhism.

  •   Deadline for applications:    22 October 2017
  •   Start of scholarship:         Summer or autumn 2018
  •   Duration of scholarship:      3 or 4 years
  • Scholarship amount:           EUR1000 per month + insurance + support for  rent + EUR460 per year + lump sums for travel
  • Scholarship donor:            German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies at the Ludwigs-Maximilian-Universität in Munich is based on a cooperation between Asian Studies (Indology, Japanology, Sinology, Tibetology) and Religious Studies and promotes and supervises PhD theses related to Buddhism within a broad range of subjects and disciplines. To strengthen the disciplinary and communicative skills of the doctoral students, the research-oriented study program is complemented by workshops and teaching placements as well as by transferable skills training.

Intensive supervision by mentoring teams helps students to accomplish doctoral projects at the highest level. In addition, the integration of the doctoral candidates into interdisciplinary and international networks promotes their professional development as young scholars.

The selection process comprises two stages: Applications are sent to the Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies in Munich. The program will select promising candidates, who then have to submit their materials to the DAAD. It is expected that the successful candidates will be chosen and informed by February 2018.

The prerequisites for application are:

  • non-German citizenship
  • a Master of Arts or Magister Artium degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • excellent knowledge of at least one Buddhist source language
  • outstanding qualifications in the subject
  • and fluency in English.

A basic knowledge of German is also desirable, though not a prerequisite, but willingness to learn German/improve German language skills will be expected. Applicants should not have lived in Germany for more than fifteen months at the time of the submission of their materials to the DAAD (in December or January), and the last final examination should have taken place no more than six years before this date.

Das Zentrum für Religion, Wirtschaft und Politik (ZRWP) an der Universität Basel sucht ab dem 1. April 2018 für mind. 12 Monate (eine Verlängerung um 18 Monate ist möglich) eine/n PostdoktorandIn für das Forschungsprojekt “Urban Green Religions”.

Das ZRWP ist eine gemeinsame Einrichtung der Universitäten Basel, Fribourg, Lausanne, Luzern und Zürich sowie des Collegium Helveticum. Das ZRWP widmet sich in Forschung und Lehre der inter- und transdisziplinären Untersuchung von Religion und ihren Wechselwirkungen mit Wirtschaft und Politik.

 

Über das Forschungsprojekt:

Das Forschungsprojekt “Urban Green Religions” wird über eine Gesamtzeit von 30 Monaten die Rolle von Religion in urbanen Energiewendeprozessen untersuchen. Hierzu werden mitunter qualitative Leitfadeninterviews mit Akteuren aus unterschiedlichen Sektoren (z.B. Politik, Wirtschaft, Verwaltung) der gewählten Städte durchgeführt. Das Projekt wird durch den Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNF) gefördert.

 

Ihre Aufgaben:

– Selbständige Durchführung des Forschungsprojekts in Kooperation mit der Projektleitung

– Verfassen von peer-reviewten Artikeln zum Forschungsprojekt

– Organisation von wissenschaftlichen Veranstaltungen

– Beteiligung an der Lehre des ZRWP

 

Ihr Profil:

– eine abgeschlossene Promotion in Religionswissenschaft, Soziologie, Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaft, Theologie, Ethnologie oder Anthropologie

– einen Forschungsschwerpunkt im Bereich Religion und/oder Nachhaltigkeit

– empirische Forschungserfahrung (besonders qualitative Leitfadeninterviews)

– Erfahrung in der eigenständigen Durchführung von Forschungsprojekten

– sehr gute Kenntnisse der englischen und der deutschen Sprache

– Aufgeschlossenheit für interdisziplinäre und internationale Zusammenarbeit

Please find below the call for application for 2 year post-doctoral position based at CEFRES (Prague)  on the topic “Islamic Activists in Exile: Europe, Middle East and South-Asia. Deadline: 23 August 2017. 

Topic 3: “Islamic Activists in Exile: Europe, Middle East and South-Asia”

This research project will associate one post-doctoral researcher with CAS researcher Giedre Sabaseviciute.

Description: Candidates will be expected to contribute to the project on the contemporary exiled Islamic activists in European, Middle Eastern and South-Asian cities. The project aims to research the ways in which the experience of exile affect the trajectories of activism, focusing on how different national context influence their career choices, which vary between the continuation of activism, involvement into different causes, or disengagement. Possible research topics include but are not restricted to 1- circulation of ideas, norms and activism through human networks; 2- patterns of activist network formation; 3- relationship between the exiled activists and their host countries; 4- continuities and ruptures in individual trajectories of activism. Candidates are expected to have conducted their doctoral research in one of the regions covered by the project (The Gulf, Turkey, South-Asia), to be proficient of one of its languages (Turkish, Arabic, Malay), and have an important knowledge of the fieldwork. Interdisciplinary approach is preferred, as well as some experience in ethnographic and biographical research, media studies, and discourse analysis.

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Department for Socio-Cultural Diversity) wishes to appoint a highly qualified candidate for a new postdoctoral research position for three years. Applicants should have a degree in anthropology, sociology, political science, geography or another relevant social science. Experience working with asylum-seekers will be an advantage.

Researching in Göttingen (or another to-be-arranged German city), the postdoctoral researcher will qualitatively examine asylum-seekers’ differential access to resources, services, information and advice (particularly concerning their legal status, conditions, and restrictions), as well as their understandings of these. Accordingly, the researcher will also investigate asylum-seekers’ ability to conduct some form of individual independence, engage in family life, access jobs, education, training, and housing, as well as degrees of mobility within the parameters set out by respective legal statuses.

Very good spoken and written German and English is required. [The working language of the Institute is English, and publications in English-language academic journals and books are prioritized.] An additional language, relevant to contemporary asylum-seekers in Germany, will also be an advantage. Salary is based on the German public service scale TVöD (level E 13).
