Governing religion: Interfaith dialogue and organized cultural encounters

You are invited to the research seminar and joint PhD-course ‘Governing religion: Interfaith dialogue and organized cultural encounters’ held at University of Agder (UiA) in Kristiansand, Norway, on March 30 2016.

The seminar critically engages with the ways in which interfaith dialogue constitutes a means to govern religion and the religious, and it explores which forms of religion that are produced from these organized cultural encounters and raises questions as to which roles local government, migration and media play.

Two keynote lectures by international experts on interfaith dialogue, Mar Griera from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Lise Paulsen Galal from Roskilde University, will take place during the morning session. The rest of the seminar will take the form of a workshop and provide an opportunity for Ph.D.-students to present on-going Ph.D.-projects (app. 30-45 min. each) and receive comments from the lectures, commentators and fellow Ph.D.-students.

The seminar is free of charge. Lunch, coffee and tea will be provided as well as mandatory reading for the seminar (app. 3 texts). The seminar is open for all, but preregistration is necessary.

Deadline for registration: March 7 2016 to Louise Lund Liebmann (louise.l.liebmann@uia.no).

For those PhD-students who want to present a paper: please add an abstract of 200 words.

Notification of paper acceptance will be given shortly after the deadline.

The seminar is organized by the research project ‘Conflicts in Mediatized Religious Environments’ (CoMRel) and University of Agder.

Practices towards good life? The role of religion and faith in the integration process of immigrants – is it threat or possibility?

18th Nordic Migration Conference Oslo 11 – 12 August 2016

Welcome to our workshop:

Practices towards good life?

The role of religion and faith in the integration process of immigrants – is it threat or possibility?

Organizers:

Dr. Ulla Siirto, Principal lecturer, Diaconia University of Applied Sciences

Dr. Sari Hammar, Specialist, Diaconia University of Applied Sciences

Contact:

ulla.siirto@diak.fi; sari.hammar@diak.fi

There are rapid changes going on in Europe due to the influx of migrants. In many countries we are facing a challenge to live together in culturally – and religiously – diverse societies in different scale than before. It is largely agreed that some new practices are needed to promote integration of the newcomers. But how ready we are to open up the discussion about the role of the religion(s) and faith(s) in this context?

We express that dialogue between the representatives of different religions and faiths is essential to build mutual understanding and cohesion. But before the parties are capable to start the dialogue they might need some new tools to help the process to begin.

Religious literacy is our contribution to introduce one practice to improve the competence of meeting and cooperate with people with different backgrounds. To join us in this workshop we are welcoming all who have practices or examples or other interests concerning religion/faith and integration.

New Religious Movements, Minorities and Media Conference – U of Montreal – March 17th-18th

The Chair for the Management of Cultural and Religious Diversity of the University of Montreal, the Religion and Diversity Project, and the CÉINR (Centre d’écoute et d’interprétation des nouvelles recherches du croire)
present the

“NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS, MINORITIES AND MEDIA CONFERENCE”

University of Montreal, Marguerite-d’Youville pavilion,
Thursday March 17th 2016, 2:00-6:30pm
and Friday March 18th 2016, 8:30 am-4:20 pm

Organisation : Solange Lefebvre, Chair-holder, Chair for the Management of Cultural and Religious Diversity (University of Montreal), and Mathilde Vanasse-Pelletier, Ph.D. Candidate, religious studies (University of Montreal).

Theme:

In recent years, collective anxiety surrounding religious identities seems mainly to be concerned with “world religions”, especially Islam. However, another religious issue is also catching public attention, causing concern and attracting the interest of scholars: new religious movements (NRMs), frequently labelled as “cults”. With this framework in mind, the aim of the conference will be to explore the status of minority religious groups in the contemporary globalized context.

More specifically, we will consider media treatment of small religious minorities, and the theoretical, methodological and conceptual issues surrounding the study of NRMs and varieties of media sources.

If you wish to attend, please send an email to the following address :

Istanbul Seminars 2016 | Call for Students and Scholars

Reset-Dialogues on Civilizations is glad to announce the 9th Istanbul Seminars, to be held on 24-28 May 2016 at the Istanbul Bilgi University. This email is to announce that applications are open for students and young scholars

Istanbul Seminars 2016 | 24-28 May 2016
Religion, Rights and the Public Sphere
Whereas religiously inspired social movements, political parties, institutions of charity make an important contribution to society in terms of civil life and social cohesion, every religion can also play a negative role in radicalizing identities, in making compromises more difficult, in provoking violence and wars. That religious traditions risk to be a double-edged sword is today particularly evident in the Muslim world, where democratization and modernization processes risk to be obliterated by radical Islam, terrorism, the escalation of the Shia-Sunni conflict. This rises important questions with regard to what makes religions contribute to the foundations and legitimacy of democracy and why, on the contrary, at times religions turn to be source of extremism and intolerance. What is the connection between religious radicalism and the colonial and postcolonial legacy? Is radical Islam a consequence of imposed and fragile state-building processes confiscated by secular authoritarian regimes or vice versa? Can it be explained by the collapse of nationalist and socialist ideologies or by underdevelopment and inequalities? Do religious doctrines bring forth the radicalization of identities quite autonomously and independently from the political and social context? Accordingly, the Istanbul Seminars ’16 will discuss how much religious pluralism is a matter of politics, law and economy and to what extent it is also a matter of theology.

Among the confirmed speakers so far: Mustafa Akyol, Zygmunt Bauman, Rajeev Bhargava, Seyla Benhabib, Manuel Castells, Dipesh Chakrabarty, Mohd Eiadat, Alessandro Ferrara, Silvio Ferrari, Nilüfer Göle, Peter Gordon, Amr Hamzawy, Elisabeth Shakman Hurd, Aleksandra Kania, Cristina Lafont, Ebrahim Moosa, Fabio Petito, David Rasmussen, Olivier Roy, Saskia Sassen, Richard Sennett, Ananya Vajpeyi, Michael Walzer (in video), Patrick Weil, Boyan Znepolski and many more.

CFP: Khoja Studies conference

Proposition de Conférence/ Conference Proposal

Inaugural Khōjā Studies Conference, Autumn 2016

Call for Papers

Venue:             Paris at Le Centre d’Études de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud (CEIAS)

Date:                1-2 November 2016

Theme:            Religious identities in the construction of communal Khōjā historical memory

Agenda:           A two-day conference with a public keynote bringing together interdisciplinary Anglophone and Francophone scholars in the humanities, generally defined, to present and discuss the development of Khōjā identity over the past three centuries among transnational communities in South Asia, East Africa, Western Europe, and North America. The output of the conference will be an edited volume published by École Française d’Extrême-Orient.

Theme:            This conference is intended as an inaugural conference in the collaboration among FIU in Miami and CNRS- CEIAS in Paris. Its focus is to develop a rigorous transdisciplinary international programme of research on the history of the Khoja peoples through recherche scientifique on manuscripts, printed texts, oral traditions, and material culture. The preservation of multilingual materials in Sindhi, Kacchī, and Gujarati are important links that bridge the premodern- modern divide of Khōjā historiography. Coordinating ways to preserve these materials and make them available for academic research is a priority that necessitates international coordination and cooperation. This gathering will explore religious and social transformations that occurred as a result of migration and cosmopolitanism. It seeks to be inclusive of various modern academic interpretations of Khōjā identity and history in conversation with one another on the frames used in the interpretation of primary texts. Moreover, the Khōjā cannot be understood in isolation therefore research on related communities, such as the Lōhāṇā and Bohra, are particularly welcome as this helps to better contextualize what is sometimes a more insular Khōjā self-articulation of identity narratives.

Some of the questions posed by this conference include: What makes a religious text uniquely ‘Khōjā’ and how does has that identity evolved diachronically in various spacial contexts? How can the ginan (jñānō) corpus be categorized to reflect its interpolation over time, script changes, and space. How did the extinction of the Khōjā Sindhi script create a discontinuity that aided the development of modern Khōjā creedal Islamic identities? How does the tension between and ethnic Indic and Near Eastern Islamic identities manifest itself in the preservation of Khōjā heritage? How is communal religious authority constructed and contested transnationally?

Deadline:         Call for papers due by 1 May 2016 to be submitted at- http://www.khojastudies.org/

Funding for participant attendance is available.
