Two PhD scholarships for dissertation projects related to Buddhism.

The Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany offers two PhD scholarships for dissertation projects related to Buddhism.

  •   Deadline for applications:    22 October 2017
  •   Start of scholarship:         Summer or autumn 2018
  •   Duration of scholarship:      3 or 4 years
  • Scholarship amount:           EUR1000 per month + insurance + support for  rent + EUR460 per year + lump sums for travel
  • Scholarship donor:            German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies at the Ludwigs-Maximilian-Universität in Munich is based on a cooperation between Asian Studies (Indology, Japanology, Sinology, Tibetology) and Religious Studies and promotes and supervises PhD theses related to Buddhism within a broad range of subjects and disciplines. To strengthen the disciplinary and communicative skills of the doctoral students, the research-oriented study program is complemented by workshops and teaching placements as well as by transferable skills training.

Intensive supervision by mentoring teams helps students to accomplish doctoral projects at the highest level. In addition, the integration of the doctoral candidates into interdisciplinary and international networks promotes their professional development as young scholars.

The selection process comprises two stages: Applications are sent to the Doctoral Program in Buddhist Studies in Munich. The program will select promising candidates, who then have to submit their materials to the DAAD. It is expected that the successful candidates will be chosen and informed by February 2018.

The prerequisites for application are:

  • non-German citizenship
  • a Master of Arts or Magister Artium degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • excellent knowledge of at least one Buddhist source language
  • outstanding qualifications in the subject
  • and fluency in English.

A basic knowledge of German is also desirable, though not a prerequisite, but willingness to learn German/improve German language skills will be expected. Applicants should not have lived in Germany for more than fifteen months at the time of the submission of their materials to the DAAD (in December or January), and the last final examination should have taken place no more than six years before this date.

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Department for Socio-Cultural Diversity) wishes to appoint a highly qualified candidate for a new postdoctoral research position for three years. Applicants should have a degree in anthropology, sociology, political science, geography or another relevant social science. Experience working with asylum-seekers will be an advantage.

Researching in Göttingen (or another to-be-arranged German city), the postdoctoral researcher will qualitatively examine asylum-seekers’ differential access to resources, services, information and advice (particularly concerning their legal status, conditions, and restrictions), as well as their understandings of these. Accordingly, the researcher will also investigate asylum-seekers’ ability to conduct some form of individual independence, engage in family life, access jobs, education, training, and housing, as well as degrees of mobility within the parameters set out by respective legal statuses.

Very good spoken and written German and English is required. [The working language of the Institute is English, and publications in English-language academic journals and books are prioritized.] An additional language, relevant to contemporary asylum-seekers in Germany, will also be an advantage. Salary is based on the German public service scale TVöD (level E 13).

Applications should include a cover letter describing the applicant’s career trajectory, research experience, and interests, CV, a list of publications, publication (or Ph.D. thesis) samples and the names and contact details of two potential referees. Deadline for all applications is 17.00 pm Friday 26 May 2017. The position will commence as soon as possible, and no later than September 30th, 2017.  The 2017 UCSIA  summer school is a one-week course taking place from Sunday 27th of August until Saturday  2nd of September 2017. This year the program will focus on the topic ‘Between Market, State and Religion: Economic Realities, Social Justice & Faith Traditions’

This year, the central aim of the UCSIA summer school is to reflect upon the evolutions of economic markets interacting with specific political and socio-religious contexts through time and space. The focus is put upon the ways in which socio-economic evolutions such as globalization, the historical rise of capitalist economies and the idea of the self-regulating market interact with and affect socio-religious and cultural normative frameworks on both the level of governmental policy, economic stakeholders and the individual household. The present call invites paper proposals in which the broad topic of economic realities interacting with social contexts and faith traditions will be discussed from a diverse line of approach, clustered around following subthemes:
 
§  Globalization, economic imperialism, and social justice
§  Religious communities and economic values and production
§  Capitalism under construction: appropriation of capitalist producing and consuming
 
 
Guest lecturers are Prof. Dr. Jennifer Olmsted(Department of Economics and Middle East Studies at Drew University), Prof. Dr. Mayfair Yang (Department of Religious Studies and Department of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara), Dr. David Henig (School of Anthropology & Conservation, University of Kent, UK) and Prof. Dr. Paul Oslington (Alphacrusis College, Sydney, Australia)

Starting October 1st, 2017, the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne, the interdisciplinary graduate school of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne, offers 8 “Predoc” scholarships for the preparation of a doctoral dissertation project, each of EUR 950 monthly and for a time period of six months.
The purpose of the Predoc scholarships is to enable candidates to begin working towards a doctorate at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne immediately after obtaining their qualifying degree. The scholarship holders are supported for one semester during which they are able to develop a doctoral project with a specific focus on interdisciplinary aspects.

Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements

The Special Programme Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements has entered its final phase. The next and penultimate deadline for applications is May 24, 2017.

The funding initiative is aimed at researchers who, with an eye to current developments, are examining the emergence of political movements in the Islamic world at the national and/or transnational level. The programme takes a look at the dynamics between Islamic teachings, Islamism, nationalism and transnational orientations and environments. Scientific discussion of the countries and regions of the Islamic world should bring together expertise possessing regional and thematic focus in order to allow the problems associated with areas of conflict to be expounded upon, particularly with regards to global influences and processes of cultural exchange. The research programme addresses scholars of all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

The individual research areas are:
1. Historical and present day Islamic systems of society and state
2. The concept of nation, national movements and nationalism in Islamic civilisation
3. Islamic fundamentalism or Islamic emancipation?
4. Transnational civil society movements in the Islamic world
5. Islamic states in the international world system.
